Workshop on water policy jointly organised by ANTHRA and YAKSHI
Two workshops on water policy were jointly organised by ANTHRA and YAKSHI in 2005. 40 participants from three states viz. Andhra Pradesh, Maharastra and Karnataka, representing NGOs, people’s organisations, farmers’ organisations affiliated to CPI, academicians and activists attended the meeting. The Maharastra team comprising NCAS members presented the policy developments on water at the national and international levels and the process of drafting a people’s water manifesto. Subsequently, AP state level policy issues on drinking and irrigation were discussed. On the second day, discussions were held on the issue of large dams, displacement and the right to water for Adivasis, privatisation of water and its unequal distribution. As an outcome of the workshop an ad-hoc committee was formed to look into the current movements going on in the state and formulate a draft manifesto on water issues.
