    • We do not want Bt.Brinjal..a resounding NO by farmers from Adivasi and Rural AP !

    • On the occasion of World Food day on 16th of October several community based peoples organizations in tribal and rural areas of Andhra Pradesh: Srikakulam, Vishakapatnam, Vizianagaram, East Godavari, Khammam, Adilabad, Medak and Chittoor, organised public events to express their opposition to Bt Brinjal, which was granted permission for commercial cultivation by the India’s Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), on 14th October 2009. In Narsapur Medak district, the shepherds sangham, Brathukuderuvu Mahila sangham and local Anthra karyakartas, organised a day long hunger strike in front of the office of the Mandal Revenue Office. The event, coinciding with the weekly market-day, attracted several farmers and common citizens. The Anthra karyakartas informed people about the un-answered bio-safety issues concerning Bt Brinjal and distributed pamphlets. The day ended with the farmers organizations submitting a memorandum to the district collector, which was handed over to the MRO, stating their opposition to the Bt Brinjal, and demanding that that the government should not grant permission for its cultivation in Andhra Pradesh. On 22nd October, Anthra organised a meeting on ‘Bt Brinjal – a threat to local foods and out health
