Markets for Small Ruminant Production in India ; Policy Directions for the future’
While on one hand the market for small ruminant meat is growing, there appear to be severe constraints on small holders in terms of grazing land and fodder availability. Small ruminant production is extremely dynamic and is driven by flexibility and adaptability to changing environments. Such production systems need dynamic policies which can help small producers rather than stifle them. The objective of this workshop was to bring together researchers with different areas of expertise in small ruminant production systems to discuss • Existing systems of production and markets • Existing studies on small ruminant production from different states • Markets in the future and possible impact on existing small ruminant producers • International and National trade regimes and their impact on markets The meeting took place over 2 days in Pune.
