Buffalo Breeders of the Banni
The Anthra team consisting of Gayatri and Sachin along with Swiss internee Annie visited the Banni for understanding the livestock production system of the Banni buffalo. The Banni buffalo has recently been recognized as the 11th buffalo breed of India. It is mainly reared by Maldharis under open grazing systems in this vast grassland. Each family rears over 50 buffalo’s mainly for milk. Earlier the milk collected daily was converted to khoya, buttermilk and ghee. Today, they are selling the milk to different dairy cooperatives. The special grasses of the Banne have slowly been replaced by the invasive Prosopis juliflora and today the rearers face problems as their buffalo’s have to walk further and further in search of grass. An amazing feature of the buffalo’s is they graze at night. They leave their home villages at 4:00 in the evening and return early the next morning in time for milking. Anthra is initiating a training programme for trainers ( TOT) from the region with a focus on ethnoveterinary medicine. This programme is supported by Sahjeevan, Bhuj, Gujarat.
